General Information
Palermo is famous for its street food. This tour is perfect to try many local specialities while exploring the city’s markets. Street food has become so popular among the locals for workers’ lunch breaks and over time Palermo has become the capital of street food. Experiencing a street food tour in the city is now a way to learn more about the traditions and culture of an entire people.
We start our walking tour by passing some important monuments such as the Politeama Theatre and the Massimo Theatre, which was dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II. It is the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, renowned for its perfect acoustics. From here we start our street food in one of Palermo’s three main markets, which is the Capo market. Here we have the opportunity to taste typical fried foods such as panelle (thin chickpea fritters), crocchè (potato croquettes) and other specialities such as Sfincione (a type of pizza) and caponata.
From the market, we continue our walking tour towards Palermo Cathedral (from the outside) and the Church of San Cataldo before reaching our next stop for street food which is ‘Passami o Coppu’ where you can enjoy a delicious coppu, a paper cone with a bit of paranza as well as fried fish or shellfish.
The next street food stop is the king (or queen?) of Sicilian specialities, which is the Arancino (or arancina), fried rice balls stuffed with meat and cheese. It can also be enjoyed with other fillings and with a vegetarian option.
You cannot end street food in Palermo without tasting the most famous Sicilian dessert in the world: his majesty the cannolo alla ricotta.
