General Information
Catania is the second largest city in Sicily with over 400,000 inhabitants. Its growth has been influenced by its relationship with the imposing volcano Etna. In fact, the city is situated between the sea and the volcano and this gives the city an added and unique value. In 1669, a large and powerful volcanic eruption devastated the adjacent villages and the lava flow reached as far as the sea. Furthermore, in 1693 Catania was destroyed by a terrible earthquake and later rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style that you can still admire today in the streets of the historic centre.
Visiting Catania on foot you will appreciate the highlights of the city and admire the many historical monuments it has to offer. The visit starts at Porta Uzeda and a short walk takes you to Piazza del Duomo, the Baroque centre of the city, where you will find the famous elephant fountain in the middle of the square. During the rest of the walk you will have the chance to admire the famous coloured umbrellas that characterise Catania’s fish market and the typical Sicilian streets including Via Etnea. Finally, you will have the chance to taste some of Catania’s typical products (2 rustici and 1 cannolo) along the way.

One cannot leave Catania without visiting Piazza Duomo, the place par excellence in the city of Etna.
The square is surrounded by relevant historical monuments, each one different from the other, in which the presence of the volcano is perceived through the use of lava stone and the city’s Baroque soul. The fish market, a very picturesque place full of unique colours and sounds.
