Visit to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento

General Information

Incredible ancient ruins line the coast of Agrigento in the Valley of the Temples. You will visit many of them, starting with the Temple of Jupiter (Zeus). Had this now ruined temple been completed, it would have been one of the largest in the ancient world. The entablature was supported by columns 17 metres high, between which stood colossal statues, one of which can now be seen in the Archaeological Museum. Nearby, the Temple of the Dioscuri was a hexagonal temple, now with only four of its columns remaining. The small rose at the corner of the entablature is a typical decorative feature. Immediately next to it is a sacred area dedicated to Demeter and Persephone, goddesses of the underworld, and two sacrificial altars. Dating back to the late 6th century BC, the Temple of Hercules is probably the oldest of Agrigento’s temples, built in the ancient Doric style. Eight of its columns have been restored. On the left you can admire the deeply grooved grooves, perhaps a sign of ancient wheeled vehicles such as chariots, later used as water channels. The Temple of Concordia is the largest, most majestic and best preserved of the Doric temples in Sicily. It has a peristyle of 34 limestone tufa columns, although its original stucco covering has disappeared. Finally, the Temple of Hera Lacinia (dedicated to Juno, or its Greek equivalent Hera) has a partially preserved colonnade. On the eastern side is a sacrificial altar and, behind the temple, an ancient water cistern. At the end of the visit you can refresh yourself with a good lunch and some free time.
