General Information
The award-winning trilogy inspired by Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel The Godfather tells the story of the rise and fall of Don Vito Corleone, head of a mafia family in the city of Corleone, Sicily. The films, however, are not set in Corleone because the first director, Francis Ford Coppola, thought Corleone seemed too modern and sophisticated. Instead, he found in the picturesque Sicilian villages of Savoca and Forza d’Agrò the ideal location for filming. In addition to following in the footsteps of the Godfather, there will be many walks through the historical monuments of the two villages.
Once in Savoca, you will understand why Coppola chose this medieval village. Perched atop a rocky hill and hidden among tall elder trees, the village radiates an ancient charm with narrow streets paved with lava rock, houses covered with Sicilian tiles, and crumbling buildings dating back centuries. You will follow your guide to the places shown in the film including the Vitelli bar, which, with a wonderful terrace of vines, is where Michael asked for the hand of Mr Vitelli’s daughter in marriage.
You will continue to the church where Michael and Apollonia were married and through a winding road where the two later walked with their wedding guests, the guide will lead you to the Church of San Nicolò. Dating back to the early 13th century, this holy place boasts a picture-postcard façade and breathtaking views. Photographs taken, you will depart towards the picturesque village of Forza d’Agrò and another famous church used in the Godfather saga. The 16th-century Church of Sant’Agostino appeared in the second film when a young Vito begins his escape to America by hiding in the saddlebags of a donkey. As you walk through the city, originally settled by the Greeks in the 8th century BC, your guide will point out other sites that were also used in the final film, The Godfather III. Your tour will end with a return walk where you can relax and look back on your exciting adventure.
