General Information
The medieval hill town of Erice is about 45 minutes north-east of Trapani by bus. Settled by the Elymians, an ancient mountain people who also founded Segesta, it was an important religious site associated with the goddess of fertility: first the Carthaginian Astarte, then the Greek Aphrodite and finally the Roman Venus. Of the many churches and other monuments in the quiet little town, the Mother Church, just inside Porta Trapani, is probably the most interesting by virtue of its bell tower. Built in 1314, the interior of the church was remodelled in neo-Gothic style in 1865 but the 15th century side chapels were preserved. It is also worth paying attention to the decorated vaulted ceiling. Returning to Trapani, we will take a walking tour of the historic centre and have a chance to admire (from the outside) the Church of St Augustine, the Church of the College, the Cathedral and the Church of the Purgatory.

This was the only organised trip we took during our visit to Palermo. We booked it before leaving the UK after a careful evaluation of all available trips, as there is so much to see in Sicily! !
We were not disappointed and would highly recommend this trip.
