General Information
Your excursion will begin with a pleasant drive through the countryside, passing villages and almond groves, as you head towards Noto. The second largest city in the province of Syracuse, Noto boasts the best examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture on the island. Originally settled in the 5th century BC, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt on a grid plan according to 18th century architectural standards. This UNESCO World Heritage site has fascinating palaces, churches and other Baroque monuments lining the streets. The buildings are constructed of local white limestone that has been softened with golden hues over time. The town is built on terraces connected by monumental stairways. Its main buildings are spread out in three groups along the main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Upon arrival, you will walk to the Public Gardens to admire the busts of artists who have contributed to the town’s culture and style. Finally, you will continue on to four of the most impressive structures: the Church of San Domenico, the Church of San Carlo, the cathedral and Palazzo Ducezio.
