General Information
On this tour you will see the highlights of Messina’s historic centre. Start your guided walking tour with a stroll along one of the city’s most important streets, Via Garibaldi, full of historic sites and extraordinary buildings. You will admire the Town Hall building and the ancient Catalani Church. The latter is a jewel of Arab-Norman architecture that surprisingly withstood the onslaught of the 1908 earthquake and two world wars. You will enjoy a typical Sicilian granita at a local café, while enjoying some free time for shopping. Next, proceed to Piazza Duomo, where you will visit the Treasury, which contains the sumptuous golden mantle of the Virgin Mary, as well as a collection of important historical works of art donated by kings, bishops, nobles, and even locals as a sign of faith and thanksgiving. You will also enter the famous cathedral of Messina, almost entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1908, enriched by an interesting 15th-16th century finely carved central portal. The great bell tower, 30 metres high, contains the largest astronomical clock in the world, whose animated and mechanical statues are only visible at noon.
And don’t miss the Orion Fountain, adjacent to the cathedral, built in 1547, whose polygonal basin depicts Orion, one of the legendary founders of Messina.
